As you can tell by the pictures, we had another spectacular day for weather! We started out with a walking tour in Tirana. We stayed in a gorgeous hotel situated close to everything that we needed to see. We were right down the street from the Mother Theresa Square and the University. We were also near the Parliament so there were police officers everywhere! We went inside the beautiful Et'hem Bey mosque, built in the 18th century. We ended our tour in Skanderbeg Square, which is dedicated to the Albanian national hero that fought off the Ottomans for 25 years. We ended with a guided tour of the museum where we were given a good overview of the struggles of the Albanian people through the years.
In the afternoon we took an optional tour to the city of Kruje, located high up on the side of a mountain. We visited two museums and our favorite was a restored Ottoman home that depicted early Albanian life. We had a lovely lunch on an outdoor terrace overlooking the city. After our museum tours we got to go shopping in the old bazaar. We didn't come back with too many trinkets!
We returned to Tirana in time to have cocktails in our room. Then we walked over to a great Italian restaurant and had a delicious dinner. Just when I thought I was full enough, someone suggested that we go for Gelato (Italian ice cream). I went along but vowed to myself that I would NOT eat any ice cream! That lasted until we arrived at Ciaccolat Italiani and there was chocolate everywhere!! We were like a bunch of kids In the candy store!! We all had gelato in various flavours and walked back to the hotel with full bellies and huge smiles!!
