Goodbye Macedonia, hello Albania! We continued north along the beautiful Lake Ohrid, headed for Albania. After travelling in the EU for so many years it is easy to forget the days of border crossings! Although it took some time, we passed through the Albanian border without too much hassle but also without a new stamp in our passports! 😕
We travelled through the heart of the mountains, it was breathtaking! Where there were farms, they were small and still quite primitive. We even saw loads of hay being hauled by donkeys. It was a very scenic and interesting drive.
We arrived in the city of Berat in time for a delicious included lunch. We sat upstairs on an open balcony, giving is a lovely view of the city. The street leading "up" to the restaurant was made of individual limestone bricks, not the best place for my stilettos!!
After lunch we went on a walking tour of the old city, which is a UNESCO site. Luckily, our bus was able to drive us up to the Berat Castle. Once at the castle we took a long walk alongside the outside wall out to an overlook that gave us a view of the whole city and surrounding countryside. Spectacular!!
Our next stop was one of our favourites......wine tasting!! After a tour of the winery we got down to some not so serious wine tasting!! As the wine flowed the laughter and the volume increased....funny how that happens! Once again Gunner got out of control!! It is hard to hold a good Viking down! 😉
The two hour ride to Tirana once again got quiet as we all "reflected" on which wine was our favorite (of course we have to do that with our eyes closed)! 😉 We arrived at our hotel at 8:00 pm and we were very impressed as it is amazing!!
A few of us slipped out to grab a quick bite to eat. Our hotel is located one block away from a busy street filled with bars and restaurants. On our walk home suddenly there were sirens and police cars everywhere and some streets were being blocked off. We never did find out what was going on but we also knew better than to try to walk anywhere to find out. We did walk over to the University grounds where there was a bit of a midway set up so we watched some crazy teenagers ride "The Avenger". The evenings are so beautiful it is hard to head in to bed but the reminder of the early morning starts always convince us to get to bed.
